Perfect Places Photography

  • Trying to Make the Photo Perfect

I depend, to a very very large extent on Adobe Lightroom for my post-processing of my images.  On the whole, I am extremely happy with this situation. I am very comfortable with Lightoom - at least the parts that I use on a regular basis.

Now and again, though, I have things that I use Photoshop for.  Portraits. Removing unwanted people and cars from landscapes, etc.  So once every few months I dust off my skills and relearn (a little more quickly each time) stuff. Then there is usually a month of frenzied post processing work in Photoshop before I am satisfied with the current batch of work.

Then, once in a while, I encounter a problem that I have no idea how to tackle and no idea how to begin tackling.  I am not traditionally good at crafts. Dragging and manipulating a paintbrush is hard for me, even in a software program! So I tend to be a slow learner.

My process in trying to learn how to do stuff is as follows:
    - Try a quick Google search.  Usually I am simply overwhelmed by the oodles of CRAP that are out there that must be waded through.
    - Go through my Imagine Publishing Photoshop tutorials magazines to see if any of their tutorials address the problem.
    - Bug +Kelly Michelle

Sometimes I find the answer, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes you just can’t fix a really bad mistake in the photography itself.

Today, my problem is one I cannot even define.  I have an HDR image of a limestone rock with a sunrise behind it.  The Photomatix processing is exquisite. I’m so so so happy with it - almost can’t believe I did it myself - apart from ONE spot.  The sunlight hits one part of the limestone rock quite brightly, and the processed result is a magenta glare section on the rock.  I’d like to fix it. But if I can’t fix it right, I might just have to leave it in.

The following week of work will be dedicated to this problem - because it’s my favorite shot from the whole shoot. Of course!

Let me know if you’re interested in seeing the problem, have suggestions, or whatever, I’ll make a separate circle for anyone interested and take suggestions, abuse, criticism, and adulation there :)
